The Chrysalids

THE CHRYSALIDS – FINAL RESPONSE The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham is a story about a world where people will not accept differences, whether it is physical, psychological or spiritual. There are many themes in this story. A major theme is satire. David’s society is â€Å"mocking† our society, in real life. Societies, David’s and ours have many similarities. Ever since the beginning, mankind has excluded others for their differences. Whether it is for the color of their skin, or another physical appearance, we all have judged or have been judged unfairly by the people around us. Another major theme of this story is justice and humanity. When Uncle Axel explains the other places and people outside of Waknuk, it shows that people differ in viewpoints, and have different ways of seeing things. We are ignorant when we do not see the way others see things, or when we do not accept other because of their differences. In many cases, a person is â€Å"shunned† from a group because others do not like a certain characteristic that makes them unique. Sometimes, individuals are cast out because others are afraid of their differences that make them superior, or more advantageous. In the novel, the people of Waknuk were devoted to capturing the outlaws, because they were afraid of the group’s ability. Trust is also a theme of this story. David has many people around him, but he cannot trust everyone. Once you get to know a person, you can develop and discover a trust between you. David develops a very strong trust with his Uncle. They share everything, including emotions, opinions, and experiences. However, David does not trust his father, even though his relation means there should be a stronger bond. Anne trusted Alan more than she trusted the group. This is an example of ignorance, and not taking the time to get to know how a person is. The Chrysalids is a fascinating, yet gripping journey about inhumanity, bigotry, intolerance, justice, and lastly solidarity. It is not a surprise at all, that humans can be so cruel, and narrow-minded. Us humans are one have the most powerful and forces that exist. Our life is precious, and we usually do not take notice, and waste that life, or use it the wrong way. Human nature is something that will always exist. Without it, we would have no ideal world. ———————– The Chrysalids THE CHRYSALIDS – FINAL RESPONSE The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham is a story about a world where people will not accept differences, whether it is physical, psychological or spiritual. Delivering Lily Essay

The author wrote his story in first person perspective. He started the story by his wonders how delivering a baby might be like. Phillip Lopate was definitely nervous but he knew he would try his best to support his wife. Throughout the story it stays imagery. You can almost feel their emotions and see the scenery. He also uses some dialogue going back and forth with his wife. It first takes place at their home waiting to make sure Cheryl’s contractions were occurring regularly. It almost seemed Phillip was more nervous than Cheryl. Once they arrived to the hospital they got assigned an empty room, â€Å"it was not cozy, it was not charming, it was not tiny, it was not big, it was not even decrepit, it had nothing for the eye to fasten on.† (Lopate 423) Cheryl and Phillip were both disappointed by the room. There were couple words I did have to look up for the meaning, but overall the sentence structures were simple to read. His description made it easy to feel you were actually in part of the story. Also when he described the nurses, it almost felt you knew their personality and what they look like. Phillip goes back and forth by what was happening at that time and his thoughts, I could almost feel I was in his perspective. I cannot relate to this story, but I can understand some situation he mentioned from watching movies and reading books. Many emotions were felt through this special time of Philip Lopate: anxious, nervous, impatient, joyous, blissful, cheerful, loving, and relieved the most noticeable. Phillip is a proud man, proud of his wife and proud of becoming Lily’s father. He wants to record every part of Lily’s life and is planning to write longer on her first year. On the last page, he mentions he will do anything to keep his writing piece alive. He definitely did succeed keeping Delivering Lily alive. Even though I was not able to relate, I am sure everyone who has delivered their baby could have related to this writing piece, but I did feel like I was there with him knowing every detail he was thinking. This story had used all the punctuation structures mentioned in Hieroglyphics from our homework assignment. It was interesting seeing other ways of using a semicolon and the dashes. Overall, the story was full of anxious and loving events on delivering Lily. Both happy parents are ready for the ir journey with their loving child Lily.

Immigration reform and economic growth Research Paper

Immigration reform and economic growth - Research Paper Example nding immigration reform are also provided via an interview with Tamar Jacoby, the president and CEO of Immigration Works USA, and an immigration policy columnist for the LA Times. Essentially, this research paper hypothesizes and demonstrates that comprehensive immigration reform can both satisfy the American economy’s need for workers – especially in sectors like agriculture, construction, and the service industry – and at the same time establish a legal framework to regulate the inflow of migrants to the U.S. II. Background The importance of immigration reform to the U.S. is highlighted by Jacoby in a semi-structured interview with the researcher. In her capacity as an immigration policy columnist and the president and CEO of Immigration Works USA, Jacoby notes that immigration is a very important issue for the U.S., particularly in the campaigns leading up to recent 2012 presidential election. Moreover, other countries have been making significant progress in tegrating immigrants in a way that promotes multiculturalism and, in doing so, have integrated immigrants more acceptably into the national workforce with the results that immigrants in other countries are increasingly becoming productive members of the community. In this regard, according to Jacoby, the U.S. has a lot of room for improvement and growth in terms of immigration reform and its socio-economic improvement. Jacoby’s observation of the significance of immigration reform in the U.S., and the room for improvement, is supported by the background facts. With the 2012 presidential elections approaching, the focus on the dire state of the U.S. economy took center stage. Both sides were more fixated on short-term solutions such as tax reductions, improving infrastructure, reducing government... This paper offers a comprehensive review of current immigration policy of the United States, and adduces arguments in favor of the immigration reform. This paper demonstrates this need for economic reform by tracing the history and current developments in immigration policies and laws and their consequences for the U.S. economy and the lives of illegal immigrants. For the most part, illegal immigrants take on unskilled jobs, particularly in domestic and agricultural industries that Americans are unwilling to take. However, as a result of their illegal status, they are denied the protection that legal workers are guaranteed and thus are often exploited and underpaid. The current immigration policy and laws in the U.S. focus on border control and enforcement as opposed to taking an approach that would legalize immigrants and thus improve wages offered to low-skilled workers The U.S. has always premised its economic policies on the free movement of goods and capital. The free movement of services and people via immigration reform cannot be distinguished from the free movement of goods and capital. It is in economic interests of the U.S. to reform immigration policies in a way that focuses on opening paths to immigration, Reforms should accord amnesty to those immigrants who have been living in the U.S. for at least five years, provided they are not threatening national security. Those who have been living in the U.S. for at least three years would be subject to removal with an opportunity to re-enter the U.S. legally.

Challenge to U.N Charter Framework on Use of Force Essay

Challenge to U.N Charter Framework on Use of Force - Essay Example Supporters of humanitarian intervention give explanation for it principally in the name of a honorable imperative: "we should not let people die." This proposal is stranded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, written in 1948. For these supporters, intervention is only justifiable when it is aggravated by a substantial abuse of human rights and when it is positioned in movement by a super national body, normally the United Nations Security Council. (Wikipedia) Humanitarian intervention proceedings are all the time approved by combination of nations, which can generate two fairly diverse circumstances: The first one is the Right to Interfere which is a phrase invented by the philosopher Jean-Francois Revel in 1979. It is the acknowledgment of the right of one or many nations to disobey the national independence of another state, when an authorization has been contracted by a supranational power. In practice, due to the humanitarian emergencies, it is frequent that the permission is supplied retroactively. The second one is the Duty to Interfere, which is a responsibility which irritates all nation-states to present support at the demand of the supranational influence. Evidently, this concept is next to the imaginative perception of humanitarian intervention. It is also thoroughly discarded by the member states of the United Nations who see this concept as an undesirable violation on their privileges. (Wikipedia) Debate Surrounding Humanitarian Intervention What motivates the humanitarian intervention dispute is an apparent nervousness involving the principles of guaranteeing admiration for essential human rights and the predominance of the principles of independence,... This study stresses that  humanitarian intervention is the warning or utilization of force by a state, cluster of states, or international association principally for the function of defending the public of the objective state from extensive withdrawals of internationally acknowledged human rights (Simons). Supporters of humanitarian intervention give explanation for it principally in the name of a honorable imperative: â€Å"we should not let people die.† This proposal is stranded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, written in 1948. For these supporters, intervention is only justifiable when it is aggravated by a substantial abuse of human rights and when it is positioned in movement by a super national body, normally the United Nations Security Council.  This discussion highlights that  what motivates the humanitarian intervention dispute is an apparent nervousness involving the principles of guaranteeing admiration for essential human rights and the predomin ance of the principles of independence, non-intervention, and strength of mind which are measured indispensable features in the preservation of harmony and worldwide protection. These standards are placed out in the United Nations Charter as elementary principles of the United Nations. However, while there are instruments within the Charter for the fortification and enforcement of harmony and worldwide protection, there are no corresponding requirements or instruments in the Charter for the fortification of human rights.

Native American Art History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Native American Art History - Essay Example As the report stresses  there is omission of the Plateau and or is discussed as an imitation of the areas around it, making it hard for the art to be recognized as historical canon. â€Å"A Nez Perce shirt, technically from the Plateau, would be less likely to appear than a similar Crow shirt from the Plains, and a Nez Perce cradle might be overshadowed by one from the Great Lakes†.This essay highlights that exhibitions of Native American art focused broadly on culture areas and more narrowly on the art of specific Native nations or individual artists.P.79.There was thus no exploitation of the artwork.  Adena Pipe was often included in canons as those created by a master or genius. This is because the work was known by archeological designation and location of discovery. The great naturalism and unique nature of the pipe have placed it in the art historical canon.  Great Serpent Mound in Ohio is artwork whose date aligns closely with that of the supernova of the Crab Neb ula.P.74. It fits in the western art canon because it offers immediate comparison to other earthworks that appears in the same volumes of American sculpture.  The artwork is supposed to be wide. There are so many barriers that have limited the artwork.  Masterpieces that break from the tradition of the Native American art make the work and the artist to remain anonymous.  The artwork must conform to the standards and this has made many artworks not to be recognized.

Although loyalty is necessary and expected, underperformance is never an option. In terms of the dress code, the option will be to develop a cleat cut and well detailed dress code with all details included. Here the main reason this will be chosen is to ensure there are no unclear rules. Although people working within the environment are professionals, there is a need to identify what is acceptable in the work place. Hence it is always better to set down rules as this will clear all ambiguities and will provide a clear set of expectations from the employees. In terms of monitoring of the employees, the choice here will be to install a program monitoring their Web usage. However this will only be checked in the case of any discrepancies regarding the employees and in the case where any issues are brought out regarding the employees. How to Prepare for Your Final Exams Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

How to Prepare for Your Final Exams - Essay Example Before, the beginning of examinations, the student should set certain goals which he likes to achieve or reflect on the examination results. Subsequently, all the efforts should be made to attain those predetermined goals. The goals should be realistic ones. In other words, the student should never set goals which are beyond his capabilities. There are many students who struggle to get even the desired grades in the final examinations because of the unrealistic goals just before the examinations. It is difficult for an average student to achieve first grade even if he tries extremely hard during the final examinations. If he wants to achieve first grade he should begin his preparations at the beginning of the course itself. When it comes to preparations of final examinations, different students opt for different ways. However, there are some general principles which are followed by the majority of the students while they prepare for their final examinations. First, it is better to start examination preparations as early as possible in order to avoid problems later. Early preparations help the student to avoid stress and anxiety with respect to final examinations. Majority of the students fail to perform well in final examinations because of their anxiety and stress related to the outcomes of the examination. Self-assessment of the level of knowledge in each subject is the second step in the preparations of final examinations. Before the beginning of the preparations, the student should decide which subjects need more attention and which subjects need less attention since he is the only one who knows his mastery in different subjects very well. Time management is the third and most important step in the preparations for final examinations. More time should be allocated to difficult subjects and less time should be allocated to easy subjects.

Education - Essay Example Therefore, the American economy might find itself irreparably outdated if the current behavior is not changed and the students urged to concentrate more on their studies and less on partying and watching television. The film provides statistical data that indicate how the American students are behaving as compared to students in other regions. This is when considering commitment to education. Here, the average American student spends more time when watching television shows as compared to the time spent when learning. Specifically, this adds to 1,500 hours each year and 900 hours when learning or in the classrooms (â€Å"Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination (13 Minute Cut) Part 2†). American students depicted in the film also confirm that they view school as a rite of passage. Moreover, the American students have lower hours allocated for learning per day. At least 66% of these students allocate at most one hour for doing homework every day (â€Å"Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination (13 Minute Cut) Part 2†). The statistical data provided by the film with respect to the time that the American students allocate to education during weekends is more worrying. This is becaus e not even one hour is allocated to education during weekends. These students like having other activities, which are not related to education such as partying. The choice of subjects done by American students is also worrying. This is because they do not choose the subjects of interest, which their counterparts in India and China take advantage of. Such subjects include science and mathematics. This is as compared to other students in different countries who take higher education with higher levels of seriousness especially through pursuing these competitive subjects. According to the documentary, the students in India and China show different behavior in all aspects such as the hours they allocate to education, the subjects of

Forensic Nursing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Forensic Nursing - Research Paper Example The students learned while on job, mostly in healthcare facilities through observation and knowledge acquisition from experienced nurses (Burgess, Berger & Boersma, 2004). The fundamental nursing program of study focuses on firm psychological and physical science base. This essential base comprises human anatomy and physiology, behavioral sciences, biology, nursing arts, theory and general humanities. In the late 20hcentury, nursing ac a course became integral in a majority of universities. This immense advancement is attributable to demands of consumers as well as the more expansive roles for nursing. Nursing practice has undergone metamorphosis with the objective of meeting the needs of the society and the shifting clients’ needs. Conventionally, nurses have been trained as generalists and nurses with immense experience in clinical settings in specific areas are considered to be specialists. A specialty or occupation involving specialty calls for a body of practical applicat ion and theoretical knowledge. These undertakings have to be of highly specialized nature. Furthermore, a specialty area is often depicted to have a legally approved certification course which assesses the achievement of set standards. Additionally, specialty can be defined as a particular area of functional and clinical nursing with a fine, comprehensive focus for safe delivery of wide range of services in that specific nursing area. Early 1980s were a hallmark of a wide range of informal and formal nursing specialty programmes in nursing. Among pioneer specialties in nursing included areas of perinatal care, oncology and gerontology. The acknowledgment of a specialist field of practice is significantly increased with the training tracks which enhance the specialization (Lynch, 2007). Towards the end of the 20th century, it was a testament that a pioneering shift towards forensic nursing education was occurring globally at the levels of diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate. Dev elopment in this nursing specialty area was however slow compared to the already well established areas like gerontology and critical nurse care. Consequently, the educational advancement of forensic nursing was probably hampered by the need to first of all have a specialty accreditation. Forensic nursing is comprised of numerous subspecialties. In all these subcategories, the principal nursing practice is to offer care for offenders and victims both living and deceased. Such clinical care is interfaced with a legal perspective. Nurses who practice forensic application in their delivery of services are entangled to other disciplines hence it can be termed as a multidisciplinary specialty area. Such an interface allows forensic nurses to navigate systems such as child welfare system and criminal justice. Additionally, forensic nurses are linked to systems of medical examiner or coroner as well as the mental healthcare system all of which depend on provision of nursing services. Each subspecialty of forensic nursing has its own unique history and role in clinical practice development. Such factors have been influenced by societal needs reforms within healthcare settings and prisons as well as public sensitivity (Sekula, Colbert, Zoucha, Amar & Williams, 2012). An elaborate literature review in the field of forensic nursing identifies the following subspecialties in the nursing field; Forensic correctional or psychiatric nursing, sex

Is the Chinese Renminbi Undervalued Essay Example for Free

Is the Chinese Renminbi Undervalued Essay Since July 2005, first time being revalued after 11 years of fixing at 8.27, Chinese Yuan has been heading towards only one direction – all the way from 8.27 to 6.27. Although Yuan is a highly regulated currency by government, Chinese officials could no longer peg the Yuan as it used to be in a closed economy because WTO had opened up doors for Chinese manufacturers in 2001 to export cheap goods and services to developed countries. With trillions of foreign capital flooding into the country, Yuan has appreciated over 30% over seven years. However, this one-way money flow cannot be sustained. Though it is not sure whether Yuan is at the absolute equilibrium, it is currently neither significantly undervalued nor overvalued. This essay is going to explain why Yuan is modestly priced with analysis in both the fundamentals and money flows. Needs for appreciation in past In theory, two open economies should have equivalent purchasing power – that is, if 10 units of foreign currency can buy something that is valued at 1 unit of domestic currency, the implied equilibrium exchange rate should also be 10(domestic as based money). Otherwise, there is an arbitrage opportunity. We call this Purchase Power Parity. In reality, despite some limitations about this theory, it explains most of the valuation problem in China. Take a look at China’s Balance of Payments over 2003-2010 and it is obvious to observe huge surplus annually in both current and capital financial account, accumulating to a foreign reserve of $3.3 trillion. Reach equilibrium? At the government level, on one hand, it had to increase money base to maintain exchange rate against USD at a gradual appreciation pace. On the other hand, it needs to hold huge foreign assets, primarily in USD, to back up its currency from deprecation in the event of capital outflows. Amid the money inflow, Chinese central bank faced mounting pressure of inflation on local assets. The private sectors are impacted in two ways. Firstly, Chinese residents and companies feel much richer now because higher RMB increases their purchase power of foreign assets. This means more imports and capital account outflows. Secondly, inflation and appreciation means that Chinese products and services are more expensive. And this would lead to less exports. Pew Survey showed that 70% of Chinese people feel financially better off than five years ago, which among the best in the world. In the last a few years, the fact of continues Yuan appreciation, associated with stories about how China is cash rich and how Chinese investors are buying everything they can in the world, raises interesting discussion if Yuan had appreciated enough. There is also a trend that more goods are manufactured in new WTO members such as Nepal and Vietnam that have price advantage over China. Moreover, in the currency forward market, investors have priced in modest depreciation for Yuan in the next 12 months and spot market is no longer moving towards one direction. Data shows†¦ All those various observations reveal the same process that drives RMB exchange rate to an equilibrium level. Recent data also suggests that at current FX level, the rise in trade surplus and capital finance account surplus slowed (see chart below). So does foreign reserve. What does it means? If we apply a popular formula: Capital out flow = Foreign Reserve – FDI – Trade surplus Numbers imply that 62.4 – 128.5 – 145.8 = 211.9 billions has flown out of China in the first three quarters of 2012. Although this estimation still lacks of actual evidence, the scale of growth slowing down in foreign reserve in 2012 is worth attention since it is so large that it is hard to be justified by seasonal adjustment or calculation period discrepancy. This might signal the start of reverse capital flows of Yuan, which means Yuan is no longer undervalued. Ultimately†¦ The answer to Yuan’s valuation problem is complex especially given that it is still mostly controlled by government and there are so many dynamic factors to consider. So far there are some money flows and data support the conclusion that Yuan is no longer significantly undervalued. In the long run, as expectation of Chinese government to allow a fully conversion Yuan is built on, maybe the real answer can only be found out by then.

(2) Sufficient market demand, active and effective campaign. (3) The location of the grasp. Clothing store is in the address of beauty and in a business circle. 5.0 The Market Analysis 5.1 The market demand Our consumer demand is still relatively ample. On the one hand, there are stable and old customers, on the other hand, there are beautiful natural and relatively stable business district. (1) Stability of the old client resources. This part of the consumer is the natural client resources after the completion of the new brand stores. When they face more appeal, better products and services of the brand stores, they will continually become the loyal customers of the brand. The residential area Enterprises in the region Schools in the region In general, the target consumers are sufficient, but here there is a lack of brand appeal on the scale of the clothing store, we shop here just to fill this market gap. 5.2 Industry development trends (1) The clothing market is growing rapidly  [7]  , and it has become a major trend of consumption, the market early training has ended. (2) The taste of the consumer is becoming increasingly high. The culture charm is the charm of the market. Consumers are starting to cognitive clothing brand, clothing style and know how to enjoy the fun. The rapid development of sports clothing market is closely related to the natural sport interest of the consumer. (3) Education level, family income and frequency of exercise show a significant positive correlation  [8]  . (4) The competition within the industry and associated industries is increasingly intense. There are more and more clothing stores in the city. Meanwhile, other brands of sports clothing are all relevant alternatives. 5.3 Competition comparisons (1) Indirect competition with the strong brand stores. Currently the city has more than 10 sports clothing stores, of which the largest competitor of Adidas, Nike, 4. Peripheral consumer source will be diverted by these indirect competitors. (2) Direct competitors. Some of the other sports clothing in the region is the direct competitors. Their size is not too large, but they have some characteristics, price and quality are good. These stores still have a certain competition. However, peer competition situation, mainly small-scale, has a certain personality clothing store in the region, is good for us. In contrast, our shop has a considerable advantage on brand appeal, management level, product and service quality, scale and finance. The fashion and taste of the clothing shop determine its share of emotional consumption, and consumers are very concerned about the brand and grade factors. This can also explain the large number of consumers prefer to find clothing store downtown. 6.0 Promotion Strategy 6.1 Market strategy Target market The target market contains the regions consumers in the business district, with monthly income of 1,000 $A. The majority are well-educated, and they pursuit fashion and taste, mainly youngster and the middle-aged. Marketing planning Utilize the brand and resources advantages, and establish rapidly the popularity and reputation of Adidas to solid the old consumer source, getting back the consumers attracted by strong brand stores and local specialty shops. Although the Adidas brand is strong, this region is likely to have other strong brand clothing store in the future. Therefore, we must use all the opportunities and resources now, making a good service marketing and more personalized service, build our own brand to consolidate the customer loyalty. 6.2 Promotion The most important thing is to make the shop known by the consumers nearby as quickly as possible. (1) Advertising For district residents, deliver fine single-page advertisement and small gifts, one-page form can also be made the form of discount vouchers. (2) Event marketing Hold student party and reading activities. Contact the Universitys student union and several important regional organizations; hold a number of salon parties and school activities and this is helpful in raising quality to attract students and young consumers. When the time is ripe, we can also organize an activity with movement and life as the theme of the essay writing. (3) Service marketing Besides brand identity, service for clothing is also important to consumers. To do this, more personalized service is needed. Establish membership card. Members name is printed on the card, such as bank card. Membership card discount rate was not high, such as 9.8 fold. However, on the one hand, it can give consumers a sense of respectability, and on the other hand, it is easy for attendant to call the consumers. Especially if consumers and other people are together, and the attendants can publicly call him (her) Mr. (Miss), they will feel they are respected and welcomed. (4) Personalized service Put some promotional materials in the table, and the content of which is about the knowledge and stories of the Adidas. On the one hand, it can enhance the taste and the atmosphere, and on the other hand, it can increase the favorable impression of consumers. Consider The Theme Of Loneliness In The Novel Of Mice And Men. How :: English Literature

Consider The Theme Of Loneliness In The Novel Of Mice And Men. How Does It Affect The Characters? I will be looking at the theme of loneliness, how it effects the characters, how the scenes roll in with what's happening etc. When you read about George and Lennie you realise that they have a history. You think that they are a perfect pair. One is smart, aggressive, quick and looks out for the other (George) while the other one (Lennie) is slow, dumb, big, strong, kind, caring and needs to be looked out for. They fit together like a jigsaw. George and Lennie are the main characters and they are the only ones with the biggest dream - to get a big house with rabbits. That's what keeps them getting through the day. Their relationship together doesn't look close but it is. George once told Lennie to jump into a river. He did it and nearly drowned which I think showed George how much Lennie trusted him so Lennie thought that he would always be safe. Ever since then, George hasn't taken advantage of his power over Lennie. Two things drive their relationship. Their dreams, that keeps them going through the day and the fear of loneliness. Neither one of them wants to be alone nor so they fear it. Like when Lennie threatens to go into the cave alone and so therefore George fears and tries to keep him. George is a sharp man. His features are very precise and fixed. Each part of him is defined: small strong hands, slender arms and a thin bony nose. Steinbeck also says that he has restless eyes, which sometimes scares me because you get this picture in your head of tired open eyes. Steinbeck describes George like this so that he is the opposite of Lennie, which makes them opposite in every way. George's personality is a bit bad tempered. He's like Lennie's mother because he's always looking out for Lennie, which I guess makes him a caring person. He's also short tempered, as he gets agitated very easily, usually at Lennie. I think that the reason why George is so frustrated is because he has to put up with Lennie's stupidity all the time, which would make anyone frustrated. I guess you could call George friendly because he made friends with all of the people at the ranch except for Curley and his wife. He didn't make friends with them because being friends with them would cause trouble. That's a smart thing and being smart is another quality of George's personality. I think that by making George the opposite of Lennie, Steinbeck is

Should We Respect Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestlers? Essay -- Expository

Pro Wrestlers – Why Can’t They Get Any Respect? Time to point out the obvious: pro-wrestling is not a sport. Why? Because pro-wrestling involves no sport[ing]. Wrestlers do not show up to work every day trying to do all they can to win; they show up to work trying to do all they can to do their job, which is entertain the fans. However, this line of thinking often leads to another conclusion: If pro wrestling is not a sport, then wrestlers are not athletes. This could not be further from the truth. What pro wrestlers do in the ring day in and day out may not be sport, but it is athletic activity on the most demanding level. It is high time that the men and women who work harder than any other professional athletes got a little respect. Think about the four major sports in America: football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Football players perform once a week. Hockey and basketball players work from 2-4 times a week. Baseball players may play up to five games a week, but the physicality of that sport is much lower than the other three (especially football and hockey). Now, how often do professional wrestlers perform? Well, for example, the World Wrestling Federation performs three weekly shows: Raw on Mondays, Smackdown! on Thursdays, and Heat on Sundays. In addition, each month there is a Pay-Per-View event on a single Sunday. Now, that means 3-4 times per week, already even with hockey and basketball players. However, wrestlers also work what are called House Shows: non-televised "events-between-events." They can do up to 3 a week in addition to their already[-] busy schedules. Not wrestling today? Get on the bus and travel to the next town. Not travelling today? Get in the gym and train. The work never ends. Take ... ... millions watching around the world. Hart fell from rafters 40 feet above the ring, hitting his head on a turnbuckle on the way down and snapping his neck. He died on impact, during what was a common way for him to enter the ring as his "Blue Blazer" persona. Knee and back injuries plague wrestlers from Hulk Hogan to Steve Austin and all the way down, and always have. Pro wrestling is just as dangerous as pro football. And wrestlers get paid a whole lot less, on average. Pro wrestling is not for everyone, and I would be naive to think I could change a lot of minds with this piece. However, I hope I have given sufficient examples as to why pro wrestlers should be given more respect as athletes. A final thought: many pro athletes cannot speak straight when interviewed after a game, but pro wrestlers have to be passable actors, in addition to their athletic prowess.

Economic Theories Applied to the New Economy Essay -- Sony Economics B

Economic Theories Applied to the New Economy Discuss the extent to which the economic theories in the Market’s Reader can be applied to the â€Å"New Economy†. (50 marks) A) Discuss the extent to which the economic theories in the Market’s Reader can be applied to the â€Å"New Economy†. (50 marks) In this question, I will define the old and new Economy, then I will mention the main characters of New Economy and what is different between new and old Economy. After that, I will discuss the role of knowledge, innovation, and individual creative and competitive as the primary resource needed to create economic wealth. Then, I will discuss Innovation reduce costs and improve product quality and how advances technology achieve the cost reduction and reserve the economic scale in good level. finally I will Study the Economic theories in market reader, clearifing how it could use and ably in the new economy. It may be helpful to describe the â€Å"old economy† before I talk about the â€Å"new economy.† From around 1938 to 1974, the economy was built on a manufacturing base geared toward standardized production (It was manual labor) (1). It was organized into stable, hierarchical and generally autocratic organizations. These organizations achieved a competitive edge in the market by making standardized products faster and more economically. They focused on incremental cost reductions and a national marketplace. This is how success and prosperity were achieved in most courtiers, examples of type of organization could be found in textile and steel mills. This economic order began breaking down between the mid-1970s and the early 1990s. The crisis included both textiles and steel in a period of transition from the old economic order to the new one. a lot of countries loss their competitive edge because other countries were making things faster and cheaper. The cheap labor which had brought industries to the South was being very cheap. At the same time, workers also began wanting a higher standard of living, wanting cars, televisions, washing machines, better clothes and homes, wanting a chance to educate their children. Text Box: source: http://www.calumet.purdue.edu/management/hrm_sum.htmlThe new economy is emerging as a knowledge- and idea-based economy. In this new economy, the key to success and prosperity is the extent to which t... ...er design and high prices. The year also marked the company's restructuring of its sales and distribution channels. In addition to the existing structures based on product categories, a new organization was set to be established, that would focus exclusively on mass-retailers, in an attempt to foster close knitted relationships and improve communications with its consumers. The strategies that Sony must continue to pursue are: it must keep itself ahead of the change curve. In order to do so, the company must be able anticipate the direction of the change. Second, it must be able to focus and make the change happen. Also, Sony as a company needs to redefine itself from a business perspective, demonstrating that Sony is a consumer electronics products company, not a gaming company. For the market of consumer electronics is an ever-growing market and will always be significantly greater than the target market for games, which only includes a small segment consisting mainly of children and teenagers. However, from a holistic point of view, Sony should strengthen and maximize the brand value of its core sectors- electronics, games and content (music and picture).

New Heritage Doll Company Essay

1. Describe and compare the business rationales for each of the two project proposals under consideration. Which do you feel is the more compelling? Project 1: Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansion Expand the successful Match My Doll Clothing Line to include matching all-season clothing for tween girls and their dolls. Pros: Current popularity will enable company to maintain premium prices. Company could take advantage of off-peak discounts offered by some suppliers and contract manufacturers. Would help reduce the seasonality in New Heritage’s sales and earnings. Project poses moderate risk – about the same as the production division’s existing business as a whole. Cons: Company has to exploit the opportunity without delay to be able to exploit the current popularity of the original Match My Doll Clothing line. Large outlays for R&D, market research and marketing are needed. Project 2: Design Your Own Doll Targets existing customers and will offer customized dolls that the customer could customize to create one-of-a-kind addition to their existing collection of dolls. Pros: Market research with focus group indicates that there is a lot of enthusiasm for the product concept. Company will be able to charge premium prices for this product. Will improve customer loyalty. Will create a unique experience for customers. Cons: Increased manufacturing complexity and expense, involves higher risk. Low production runs and volumes would mean higher fixed costs per unit. Therefore, higher breakeven volume for project (longer payback period). Would require the company to make significant changes to its existing technology infrastructure, expand its webhosting capacity and involve legal measure to implement new third party service agreements to provide better service quality. Longer development time (including product testing) – up to 12 months. Much larger initial investment required than the first project.  The Match My Doll Clothing Line expansion project uses existing infrastructure and technology/ products. It will also fill the â€Å"gap† in the year-round revenues that occur due to the seasonality of demand. This project requires a smaller investment and has a shorter payback period. The Design Your Own Doll project requires a larger investment and will require new equipment, technology and third-party agreements. The business plan and process will become more complicated. This project also has a longer payback period. On the other hand, this project will earn higher returns. Both the projects will require some continuing capital expenditures. However, the Design Your Own Doll option will require higher capital expenditures compared to the Match My Doll Clothing Line project. Design Your Own Doll project is expected to make higher returns according to the projections. It also carries a higher risk due to the complexity of operations involved. See attached sheet for detailed calculations. 2. What are the free cash flows that are relevant to analyzing the two projects? 3. Match My Doll Clothing Line Free Cash Flow (without TV) = $2,091.54 Match My Doll Clothing Line Free Cash Flow (with TV) = $16,344.40 Design Your Own Doll Free Cash Flow (without TV) = -$1,019.8 Design Your Own Doll Free Cash Flow (with TV) = $24,732.06 4. What are the NPVs of the two projects? What decision should Emily Harris recommend? 5. NPV Calculation Match My Doll Clothing Line: NPV = $7,148.35 Design My Doll: NPV = $7,285.68 Based on the calculations in the above steps, it is determined that Design My Doll project has a higher NPV and hence would be a better choice, but the first project is less risky and has a shorter payback period and therefore might be more attractive to the board.

Important Element in the Story’s Significance Essay

In the two miserable stories, comminuted Things by stonecutter and The closing curtain of Something by Hemingway, both(prenominal) authors make the designation probatory to the layers message. The backing Little Things is somewhat ironic in that the word little could give ear to the vitiate or could in point be c all(prenominal)ing their argument petty, even though the electric s catchr that they are bit e actuallywhere is a major make love. This irony is signifi adviset to the composition because even though the parents emerge passionate just ab come forth their infant, the argument clearly lies deeper. The title The End of Something could also refer to a do of things. In this story worldly concerny things are coming to an residual. The rarity of the drudgery and the tget at Hortons Bay, the conclusion of break away and Marjories relationship, the stamp turn out of their fish trips and the end of their day. Both stories are approximately the end of re lationships however, in Little Things the profligacy is angry and scarlet whereas in The End of Something the breakup is quieten and brief. The story Little Things is about the violent breakup of two parents. It is implied that they are married exactly Carver does non explicitly raise this. The opening split describes the weather and the m of day, which reflects the mood of the piece, the moroseness of the evening mirroring the dark mood within the house, it was getting dark. scarcely it was getting dark on the inside too. This shows that although the mood was dark, it was not completely saving black outside implying that in that respect may whitewash be a tenuous glimmer of entrust for the young dyad that is soon introduced. As the fight and the emotions mother more reckless and brutal the fairylike begins to fade, showing that all hope is lost. The characters in the story are not named. This gives their troth a deeper sense of urgency and imperativeness. This is apply to great effect as when we start meet the part and women, the absence of names throws us directly into the middle of their quarrel. In this piece there is no deal to build up the characters with a descriptive foreplay as it is not eventful to the story, making it more urgent. However in The End of Something we feel more agreement for the characters as we have learned about them in more detail. From the form he was in the bed path pushing turn into a suitcase when she came with the door, we can deduce from the subtext that these people are in some kind of broad-term relationship, and the sec line of the same paragraph draws wariness to the fact that they are having a heated up argument. It is extremely common that in briefly stories a lot of information is insinuated rather than being clearly stated and so the reader must draw a meaning from the subtext. The wo piecehood is the first to speak. Carver does not use speech label at all during the story in order to draw more immediacy to the article. The first line of speech Im glad youre leaving Im glad youre leaving Do you hear? shows that although the char appears to be angry at her coadjutor and glad that he is moving out it is easily noted that she in fact feels exactly the opposite. This is illustrated by the repetition of the line Im glad youre leaving showing that she is trying to quiet herself that she doesnt need him. This shows irony. The woman continues to pelt the man with slurs, son of a kick, obviously in an attempt to upgrade his economic aid and convince him to stay. When she states you cant even look me in the nervus can you? it is blatantly obvious that the man has had some kind of affair. The woman fails in catching the mans attention and therefore when she spies the despoils celluloid on the bed she takes it, out of spite. The man follows her good turn off the bedroom exculpated as he leaves symbolising the end of their relationship, looked around the bedro om before turning off the light. The rape is also not named showing that although it is the child that they are fighting over, the dispute about more and the mishandle is merely a pawn in their game of spite or revenge. The man states I want the spoil. This immediately provokes agnatic instincts from the mother who rushes to keep her child. The infant is unendingly referred to as the nipper or this baby showing that their child is solely an quarry that the agree are focusing their rage on. The mans request for the baby is not because he necessarily wants the child from love scarce more because he sees it as a prize that he can win over the woman. bit by bit their battle becomes more physical and violent as the man tries to take that baby from the woman, in the scuffle they knocked down a flowerpot. The baby senses the tension in the room and starts to cry which adds to the anxiety and desperation in the mood of the text, the baby had begun to cry. Throughout the stand -in of the story Carver intensifies the atmosphere by using urgent and effective rowing such as screaming, red faced, gripped and infliction. Nearing the end of the story the light is snarled again, the kitchen window gave no light, this line exemplifies that there was no hope left for the couple and the baby. The lines become trivialer to add to the fierce battle that the couple is suffering. The man and the woman both grab the child and pull it in different directions in a hope that one will triumph save we do not know the victor. The digest line in this manner the issue was decided, leaves us pondering a number of possible out comes. The man or the woman may have succeeded in snatching the infant for themselves or they may have pulled their baby in two. If so the story appears to be a parody of the scriptural story The Two Women and Solomon, in which a man offers to cut a baby in half to settle a quarrel between two woman as to who the mother of the baby is.In this story we are left with an double end. It is very common in short stories that the resolution of the story is left undecided, again leaving the reader to make their own conclusion from the clues given. The second short story The End of Something is also about the end of a relationship, however it is handled in a calmer and less violent manner. The first paragraph sets the scene of a calm tumble-down bay, once a busy fleshy town, now reduced to a citizen-free obsess town. The couple, scratch and Marjorie, are rowing through this bay in a calm fashion they were trolling along the sharpness of the channel bank, but they soon clearance towards dark water which shows that they are drift towards trouble. They are rowing soundlessly until Marjorie breaks the silence and begins to talk about the old mill on the shore, describing it as our old disparage this shows that their relationship stretches back a long way. gouge answers unenthusiastically. Marjorie tries to keep up the dialogue des cribing it as a castle, which shows that she sees their ruin in a fairy-tale manner. However Nick is still distant which makes Marjorie have to work sullen to keep their conversation alive. Marjorie appears to love everything about their fish trips. She obviously loves Nick very much and is enjoying spending time with him, She love to fish. She loved to fish with Nick. Clearly Nick is quite qualified at fishing and Marjorie tries to make him feel good by putting him in charge and enquire him questions to boost his ego, Theyre feeding, Marjorie said. But they wont strike, Nick said. By this Nick means that he will not strike that night. The couple carries out their actions of fishing with scarce communication and we can regularise that something is clearly upsetting Nick as Marjorie is trying to provoke conversation but to no avail. When Marjorie questions Nick Whats the field Nick? he replies I put one acrosst know. The couple set out a picnic on the coast but we can tell t hat Nick is merely going through the motions as he says I dont feel like eating and all it takes is one line from Marjorie and he agrees.
